Nominations to Hopi steering committee
Vicky Thompson, Manchester
I am an independent Libertarian Marxist based in Manchester. Ever
since the shameful exclusion of Hands Off the People of Iran from Stop
the War Coalition, I have been helping to build HOPI in the North
West. I am the co-founder and Treasurer of the University of
Manchester HOPI student society and on the provisional North West
committee. I have helped to co-ordinate HOPI interventions at meetings
and demos and in November I chaired HOPI's Manchester launch meeting,
which, in spite of an SWP-organised counter-meeting, managed to
attract an audience of over 40. Additionally, I am the secretary for
Manchester University Unite Against Fascism, an activist in Action
Palestine and an officer in the Stop the War Coalition's student
society. I am also the Treasurer of the Manchester branch of
Industrial Workers of the World (a registered Industrial union).
Ben Lewis, London
A gap-year student living in London, I am a well-known student
activist with much political experience. I have been politically active since the famous Stop The War march on February 15th 2003, after which I joined the Communist Party of Great Britain. I have been an active member of the Wahlalternative Arbeit und Soziale Gerechtigkeit in Germany and am on the National Executive of Communist Students. I have spoken for HOPI at numerous meetings both across the
country and also in Germany and have helped to bring HOPI's message
onto campus at numerous Freshers' Fairs. I am in regular contact with
radical anti-war students in Iran, allowing me to gain an insight into
the nature of their struggles and to express active solidarity with
their actions, such as the demonstrations on December 4. I believe
HOPI has the potential to become a campaign with significant roots in
society and I believe that my experience and commitment could help to
do this.
